Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy for Lung Cancer Retreatment

As cancer treatment technologies evolve, doctors are finding more ways to reduce treatment times and side effects for patients seeking a low impact on quality of life. At CyberKnife Center of Chicago, physicians accomplish this by collaborating with doctors from different specialties on primary and secondary treatment options. This interdisciplinary approach has particular advantages for patients experiencing a recurrence of their lung cancer.

Patients with recurrent lung tumors often face the challenge of choosing a treatment option that will reduce potential side effects they may already be experiencing due to previous treatment. When a patient is referred, a group of cancer specialists at CyberKnife Center of Chicago evaluate all treatment options, taking into consideration a patient’s diagnosis, disease pattern and medical history to help determine the best plan for retreatment specific to the patient’s individual needs.

Studies have shown recurrent lung cancer in patients who have been previously treated with conventional radiation therapy and subsequently receive SBRT have displayed good control at the tumor site and fewer long-term side effects over a three-year period compared with other series of retreatment.
