National Oral, Head, and Neck Cancer Awareness Week: Treatment Options

This week honors National Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Week, a time dedicated to educating patients and their families on the risks, types and treatment options for tumors found in the mouth, throat, head and neck.

At CyberKnife Center of Chicago, a key goal during awareness periods and year round is to educate our patients on the variety of treatment options available for any given diagnosis. For patients facing a head or neck cancer diagnosis, noninvasive treatment with CyberKnife® may be particularly beneficial, as tumors in these areas may develop near critical anatomy like the brainstem or spinal cord.

Unlike surgical removal, the CyberKnife system delivers high-dose radiation to tumors with pinpoint precision, which helps to reduce the risk of damaging healthy tissues and structures in the brain, neck or spine. Treatment is completed within five sessions lasting an hour or less, allowing patients to immediately return to their normal routines while experience few to no side effects.
